The Complete Summer Adventure Checklist

The Complete Summer Adventure Checklist

Summer is more than half over. Here is the checklist I use to make sure I don’t waste a single day of it.

I’m Jasper, and I take summer seriously. It is a finite resource. You get a certain number of warm days, a certain number of pool days, a certain number of long evenings outside. The number is not unlimited. I know this. I plan accordingly.

Here is my complete summer adventure checklist. Consider it a framework.

Daily Essentials (Non-Negotiable)

Morning sniff tour. Before anything else. Before breakfast even, if we can manage it. The yard in the morning has information that it won’t have later in the day. Wildlife that moved through overnight. Changes from yesterday. The full report takes ten to fifteen minutes. I take every minute.

At least one real walk. Not a quick loop around the block. A walk with intention. A trail, a park, somewhere with space. Summer is the season for this. There’s no excuse for a short walk in July.

Pool or water access. On hot days, mandatory. On mild days, strongly recommended. Even a quick wade counts. Water resets everything.

Outdoor time at golden hour. The hour before sunset in summer is among the best hours that exist. The light is different. The temperature drops to perfect. The evening smells are coming up and the day smells are settling down. I want to be outside for this every day.

Weekly Targets

One new trail. Doesn’t have to be far. Could be a park we haven’t tried, a section of a familiar trail we always skip. New = new smells = good.

One water adventure. Pool, lake, creek, beach, river — any of it. My Lab side requires regular water contact. This is health maintenance, not leisure.

One Augie session (when possible). The best days of any week include Augie. Two dogs are better than one at almost everything summer-related.

One RV or road trip day. Could be a day trip. Could be an overnight. The point is movement. New place, new campsite, new smells from the front window of the RV. Summer road trips are a non-negotiable category.

Monthly Goals (July Edition)

Hit a body of water I haven’t been in before. A new lake, a new section of river, a beach I haven’t seen. The water exploration goal is ongoing.

Find one genuinely new trail. A place my humans haven’t taken me before. These exist everywhere if you look.

One full day with no agenda. This sounds counterproductive for a checklist. But unstructured summer days produce some of the best memories. The plan is no plan.

Document something. A good photo, a good blog post, a moment that gets captured. The summers I can look back on are the ones we documented.

The Bigger Picture

Here’s the thing about summer checklists: they’re not really about checking things off. They’re about paying attention. About not letting August arrive and realizing you meant to go to that lake and never did.

I’m a dog. I live in the present tense better than most. But even I know that the good summers are the ones that were intentional.

Summer is finite. The pool will close again. The evenings will get shorter. The warm air will turn cold and we’ll remember what we had.

Make the list. Check the boxes. Go to the water.

Summer isn’t waiting. 🌿🏊🚐
